This modest earth bermed home is designed to face south and be tucked deep
into the sheletering earth of a hillside. The free flowing forms fit the contours of
the hillside and provide an organic flavor to the home both inside and out. Gardens
partially enclosed by stone walls bring the outside in through the generous
windows. A bright sunny home in winter and cool shady spot in summer, this
home uses the natural elements to great advantage.
The home was designed for a young couple who wanted room for a small family
and extra room upstairs for future growth. The tandem garage is an unusual touch
and is divided by a folding partition that provides for half of the garage to be heated
as a workshop.
The plan features three bedrooms on the main floor each with their own doors to
the garden. The Kitchen, Eating and Living Rooms have tall ceilings allowing the
upstairs loft to overlook the area. The glass walls are made up of straight sections
with standard energy efficient windows, put together to give the illusion of a curve.
The solid curved walls are stone backed by the new foam block concrete walls.
